Racial Prejudice By Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou And...

Throughout the 20th Century racial divides in American society have always been apparent. Despite the abolition of slavery, black Americans have still been treated unethically. Writers such as Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou and Kathryn Stockett have used their writing to express the unfairness of racial inequality. Langston Hughes uses his poetry to express his personal struggle relating to racial prejudice which he encountered through his life particularly in the 1920’s when he was a student at Columbia University but was forced to leave due to racial abuse. Similarly, Angelou uses literature to express her feelings about racism and slavery when she began writing her first novel in the late 60’s, a time when the civil rights movement really gathered momentum, as we see in the novel The Help, written by Kathryn Stockett, a white women living in Jackson Mississippi. Consequently the latter half of the 20th Century resulted in positive changes being made by literature, whi ch addressed the unfairness of racism in society. Because of the unfairness each writer deals with, the quest for a better life is a central theme for each writer. The unjust and horrific ordeal that Hughes encountered when he was forced out of university prompted him to start writing poetry. The concept of dreaming of a better life reoccurs frequently in his poem Dreams: Hughes is using the metaphor of the broken winged bird to symbolise his feelings towards his life at that time. I have been exposed to many forms of feminism. Many different ideas, concepts, and situations have been brought to my attention, enabling me to formulate my own loose definition of feminism, and to take those concepts with me to utilize in my life as a woman in order to obtain the life I deserve. To first understand feminism, one must be aware of the factors and forces that made—and still make—the fight for women’s rights such a relevant necessity. For example, women are mistreated and undervalued in athletics. Sharon Lennon, author of What is Mine, was taught this lesson young, as an excellent female softball player on a male team. Answer: Introduction Drugs are extremely beneficial, extend life and enhance its quality by decreasing the symptoms and enhancing human well-being. However, some drugs can have adverse effects on people and can hold the potential of rooting injury even if the drugs are used appropriately. The dermatological adverse event is an unpleasant and harmful reaction that may generate from an intercession relating to the application of a medicinal product (Uetrecht, 2010). Furthermore, the dermatologic toxicities can have reflective effect on the patient. Therefore, the dermatologic adverse events have garnered significant attention due to holding high frequency, presence in cosmetically and functional sensitive areas, etc lead to declined quality of health and life. Therefore, the current assignment will be focusing on the dermatological adverse events and the drugs that lead to such events. Type of drugs causing adverse reaction An adverse drug reaction is treated as an injury that may occur due to medication. Type A (predictable reactions): These can occur due to known pharmacological events of the drugs. It is normally dose related. Moreover, the predictable reaction comprises overdose or toxicity, drug interactions, side effects and secondary effects (Hobbs, 2010). Type B (unpredictable reactions): Theses are considered as dose independent and do not relate with the drugs pharmacological actions and may involve genetic basis. Further, the particular reaction are segmented into three groups namely hypersensitivity reaction, intolerance and idiosyncratic reaction. Type C (reactions): This type of reaction is concerned with the therapy of chronic. Type D (reactions): It is composed of delayed reactions, for instance, teratogenesis and carcinogenesis (Khan and Solensky, 2010). Drugs leading to allergies Penicillin and related antibiotic: Penicillin can lead to adverse reaction such as diarrhea, upset stomach. Moreover, the penicillin antibiotics can cause hives, rashes, swollen lips, face or tongue and itchy eyes. On the other hand, people take penicillin antibiotics over and over again without any serious problem which causes them allergies (Leung, 2010). Therefore, a person can have skin test to find out whether he/she is having penicillin allergy or not. Antibiotics containing sulfonamides: It is also termed as sulfa allergy. It is an antibiotic that contains chemicals termed sulfonamides that can cause reaction if a person is having sulfa allergy. Therefore, sulfonamide antibiotics can lead to allergic reaction that may range from meek to harsh rashes via to anaphylaxis. Thus, the allergic reaction to sulfonamide antibiotics may not be effective in increasing the likelihood (Mechcatie, 2010). On the other side, sulfonamide antibiotics involve combination drugs such as erythromycin-sulfisoxazole and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Apart from that, other sulfa medications that can create reactions are sulfasalazine and dapsone. Thus, if a person is allergic to sulfonamide antibiotic then they should avoid using the antibiotic. Anticonvulsants: This type of drug is normally used for reducing or preventing the frequency or severity of seizures in different kinds of epilepsy. On the other hand, this drug can too lead to allergy or negative drug reaction such as headache, nausea, dizziness, fever, hepatitis, skin reactions, and rashes. It is evident that carbamazepine an anticonvulsant roots rashes to 10% in individual. Moreover, anticonvulsants can also cause different types of skin reaction such as exfoliative dermatitis, urticaria, erythema multiforme and purpura (Mossillo and Pinzini, 2010). Therefore, the anticonvulsant drugs can have adverse effects such as drowsiness, lightheadedness or dizziness. Aspirin: Aspirin can also cause adverse drug reaction and a person may be having reaction to NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Therefore, the person may be suffering from itchy skin, red eyes, and hives, and runny nose, shortness of breath, coughing, anaphylaxis and coughing (Pawankar, Holgate and Rosenwasser, 2010). On the other hand, it has been known that if a person is having chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps or urticaria then a person may be at high risk of inclining towards reaction to aspirin. Chemotherapy drugs: It falls under the segment of cancer treatment that employs chemical substance. Therefore chemotherapy drugs along with other drugs such as vaccines, biological therapies and hormone therapy can cause side effects that can affect the health and life of the patients (Pichler, 2010). Moreover, the chemotherapy drugs can affect the cells in digestive tract, bone marrow, hair follicles, etc. Thus, the therapy has to taken under expert so that person does not fall into any adverse condition. Conclusion From the whole study it can be concluded that, drugs can have significantly adverse impact on the health of the people if not taken in prescribed manner. On the other hand, the person has to consult with the doctors if they are facing allergy after consuming medicine or drugs. Curious about what drove responses to the economist cartoon, I began asking about the disappointed looks that appeared on peoples faces when they first discovered I was an economist. Invariably they mentioned unpleasant memories of an introductory economics course. There were all those incomprehensible graphs, was a common refrain. Needless to say, a course can be valuable even if unpleasant. Unfortunately, however, most students seem to emerge from introductory economics courses without having learned even the most important basic principles. According to one recent study, their ability to answer simple economic questions several months after leaving the course is not measurably different from that of people who never took a principles course. What explains such abysmal performance? One problem is the encyclopedic range typical of introductory courses. As the Nobel laureate George J. Stigler wrote more than 40 years ago, The brief exposure to each of a vast array of techniques and problems leaves the student no basic economic logic with which to analyze the economic questions he will face as a citizen. Another problem is that the introductory course is increasingly tailored not for the majority of students for whom it will be their only economics course, but for the negligible fraction who will go on to become professional economists. Such courses focus on the mathematical models that have become the cornerstone of modern economic theory. These models prove daunting for many students and leave them little time and energy to focus on how basic economic principles help explain everyday behavior. But there is an even more troubling explanation for students failure to learn fundamental economic concepts. It is that many of their professors may have only a tenuous grasp of these concepts, since they, too, took encyclopedic introductory courses, followed by advanced courses that were even more technical. Consider, for example, the cost-benefit principle, which says that an action should be taken only if its benefit is at least as great as its cost. Although this principle sounds disarmingly simple, many people fail to apply it correctly because they do not understand what constitutes a relevant cost. products efficiently regardless of what consumers want Allocative efficiency- production of the particular mix of goods and services most wanted by society, i. e. mix that maximizes people’s And there are better ways to help the working poor. By Elaine S. Povich, FSB Magazine August 21 2006: 9:53 AM EDT WASHINGTON, D. C. (FSB Magazine) If you were looking for an opponent of minimum-wage increases, you might turn to someone such as Mazyar Rahimzadeh, 25. Hes got a half-million dollars in debt hanging over him, employs 35 workers, and just opened his second restaurant, Bijan, in Walnut Creek, Calif. Yet when hes asked about the California legislatures proposed bill to raise the states minimum wage by 50 cents an hour, he just shrugs. It wouldnt make that much of a difference, he says, pointing out that he already pays his workers more than the states current minimum of $6. 5 an hour. This election season, the minimum wage has once again become a political rallying point. The Chicago City Councils recent decision to require big-box retailers to pay all employees at least $10 an hour, plus $3 an hour in benefits, is just the beginning. Democrats in Congress are renewing their efforts to raise the federal minimum wage stuck at $5. 15 sin ce 1997 as a way to paint themselves as the party of the little guy. Most Republicans, while wary of polls that show public support for a higher wage, oppose it on free-market grounds, especially when addressing small- business audiences. The Republican-controlled House approved a minimum-wage hike only after it was attached to a cut in the estate tax in late July, a move that doomed the bill in the Senate. ) But as Rahimzadehs shrugging response indicates, the issue may no longer hold the power it once did to provoke heated passions among most business owners or even many low-income workers. I dont see the minimum wage as something that can drive a Democratic message or become a political flash point, says Amy Walter, an analyst for the Cook Political Report, who closely follows congressional races. To be sure, the half-million Americans who earn the minimum would welcome a raise. And the major small- business lobbying groups have rallied against further increases. Employers of entry-level workers in businesses such as restaurants, landscaping firms, and retail shops, especially outside the major cities, are the most adamant opponents. But since that last minimum-wage hike in 1997, inflation has pushed up most wages to the point that only 0. 3% of full-time workers are paid the minimum. One percent make less than that, either illegally or because they receive tips. ) In a poll of small-business owners released in March by Wells Fargo and the Gallup Organization, 86% of those surveyed said the minimum wage had no effect on them or their hiring practices. And even if the wage went up by 10%, some 75% said there would be no effect on their business. Only 14% of small-business owners who said they were thinking about hiring a new employee told the pollsters they would hire at the mi nimum wage. Dennis Jacobe, Gallups chief economist, who conducted the survey, says that its results could be partially explained by the growing number of states and localities that have set their minimum wages higher than the federal level. Even more important, Jacobe says, the typical small business hires fewer unskilled workers and more specialists than in years past. And in a tight labor market, businesses are finding that they need to pay higher wages, even to entry-level employees, to find good workers and retain them. Between 1997 and 2004, the most recent year for which the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has figures, the average hourly wage rose 8. 3%. The minimum wage has become irrelevant to a growing majority of business owners and workers. But if a minimum-wage hike wont raise many hackles, that doesnt mean that it will be without victims specifically, those businesses that do pay the minimum to many of their workers and operate in competitive industries. We cannot raise prices, says Jack Wolcott, the owner of a bookstore in Corvallis, Ore. So we have to consider discontinuing slower-moving items to compensate [for higher ages]. It gets more difficult to justify the burden on small employers of a mandated wage hike when you consider that the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that fewer than 30% of minimum wage earners are considered heads of household, according to Richard Burkhauser, professor of policy analysis and management at Cornell University. The other 70%? Mostly relatively well-off part-timers, such as suburban teenagers working sum mer jobs. Boosting the minimum wage, then, would benefit many workers who arent poor, and punish many businesses owners who cant afford it. There are more targeted ways to help the working poor. Newspaper normally publishes stories on local, national and international politics issues, entertainment, society, business, technology, education, agriculture, sports etc. Also editorials, columns and letter to editors on current issues publish in newspaper on particular pages. Print media started in these three countries with the Independence Day but some news papers were running before the partition such as Dawn, Nawa I Waqt and Jang (Pakistan) The Hindustan Times, The Times of India and Dainik Jagran (India) and The Daily Star. Women Women are an integral part of our society, and cannot be ignored due to less power and authority. They are created using the need for men and men, presenting them with a companion in the course of life. Although women are significantly in all areas of life, the long list of people in the treatment seems to be never ending. There is no denying the fact that in todays society, where women are still mostly male, is dominated by pine from the inferior place to put side-by-side with men because of social and stick are typically held social values. In fact, womens position in any of the countries varies according to the categories, regions, and rural and urban distribution unequal socio-economic development and the impact of tribal, feudal, and capitalist social formations on womens lives. Today Pakistani women have a better position than most of other Muslim women. However, on an average, the womens situation vis-Ã  -vis men are one of systemicgender subordination. However, awareness among Pakistani women to expand the educational opportunities increased from past few years. According to the United Nations development index, Pakistani women are better in gender equality, as women in India and Bangladesh. However women condition in India is worst as compared to other development countries majority of Indian population consist of female. Today average female life expectancy today in India in contrast to many others countries is below the standard line (Nautiyal Dabral, 2012). Majority of women deprived the basic facility of life such as food, health and education in India and also socially women life in India very terrible. Indian society gives the more dominancy and importance to male in any walk of life as well as male social development. The status of women in Bangladesh is defined as an ongoing gender battle, the prevailing political tide, who favors restricting the rights of women in the Islamic patriarchal patterns, and activism. The Bangladesh socio-cultural environment provides comprehensive gender inequity so that girls and women face many obstacles in their development. The girls are often considered the financial burden on the family, and since birth, they receive less investment in health, health care and education (UNICEF, 2007). In Bangladesh, women have made huge gains since the country gained independence in 1971. In the past four decades have seen increased political influence for women, better employment prospects, improving training and new laws protect their rights. Many of the women working in the States and other key positions but in issues like family violence, acid burning and rape are still persist. Media and Women The media portrayal both positive as well as negative issues of women as well as a powerful mechanism. Although the media has played an important role in highlighting womens issues, it has also had negative impact, in terms of perpetrating violence against women through pornography and images of women as a female body that can be bought and sold. (Sharma, 2005) the trend is increasing in media to represent women as victims are more alarming. Media reflects in its content the pattern of value in any society. According to (Sharma, 2005) for the purpose of promoting and disseminating information media play an important role and also it is main role in development of women in social and economic sectors. The way subjects dealing with women are treated indicated to a great extent the prevailing attitude of the society towards women. Everywhere the potential exists for the media to make a far greater contribution to the advancement of women. More women are involved in careers in the commun ications sector, but few have attained positions at the decision-making level or serve on governing boards and bodies that influence media policy. Womens appearance in sensational news stories such as glamour, sex, domestic violence and other forms of violence are still prominent (Nautiyal Dabral, 2012). Portrayal of women in the media is mostly unfair and imbalanced. They are under-represented which falsely implies that men are the cultural standard and women’s role in the social life is unimportant or negligible. Women are portrayed stereotypically that reflect and sustain socially endorsed views of gender. Their presentation in the media does not conform to their real role in the society. According to Patel (1995) the mainstream media like print more highlight the women physical body image side by side along stereotyped sexist images and the back page pin ups. She observed that one of the reasons for projection of patriarchal image of the society is disproportionate number of men in the key positions in media. As to the qualitative aspect of portrayal of women in the media that they are generally portrayed as unthinking, dependent and submissive beings with reproduction as their fundamental role. Women are either portrayed as ideal or deviant. Their real life feelings and b ehaviors are rarely depicted on screen. She is shown more in fantasy roles than her real life. Common woman in the society finds it hard to relate herself to the depiction of females in the media. The negative portrayal of women in the media not only does not correspond with the reality but also leads to promote unhealthy and harmful traits among the public. Statement of the Problem Press is prognostic the women in a totally immoral way according to society values in news. While these types of news became the sources of spreading obscenity, western style, trends and personalities are being highlighted quite indecently. The news about scandals, rapes, pregnancy, fashion shows, show-biz and private matters of wife and husband are being over played instead of the women development and social progress. The photographs related to these news are nude, and below the standards of morality. Newspapers are more focusing the sexual crimes are being highlighted in which women are badly humiliated. In fact, film stars and celebrities’ news are being accommodated as commodities. Hypothesis Whether or not Pakistani, Indian and Bangladesh press portray women as commodities? Whether or not Pakistani, Indian and Bangladesh press treating women issues in real sense and focusing social development? Whether or not Pakistani, Indian and Bangladesh press portray women issues as sensational news? Objectives of the Study The objectives of this research, which can be specified on the spot to find the answer the following questions as below: To analyze representation of women in selected newspaper of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. To examine the quality of the women related news published in selected newspapers. To find out the selected issues related to women that are discussed subject matter or not. To understand whether or not women related news are treated as traditional approach in selected newspapers. To check the nature/style of news related to women issues in selected newspapers. To understand print media reporting patterns are favorable/ unfavorable towards women Printmediaportraystereotypicalimageof womeninnewsstories Nautiyal Dabral (2012) The journals are mostly qualified for modern society and could be said to be positively harmful to the development of women as conscious individuals aware of themselves and aware of the society around them. If a woman wins a beauty contest, magazines or newspapers in particular give much importance to the news and even take her photographs on cover page but, at the same time if a woman gets the Nobel Prize she gets limited coverage. Here the difference of judgment in womens issues is quite marked in our media. Similarly the daily newspapers rarely put womens news and their development. Rather they prefer reporting on rape, atrocities, crime, sexual harassment and abuse of women prominently in their columns.
